REQUIREMENTS: Lifeguarding Class
A participant in the course must successfully complete the following challenges:
1. Complete a 550 yard (500 m) continuous (without stopping) swim demonstrating the front crawl and the breaststroke correctly. No exceptions.
2. Swim 16 yards underwater with one breath, retrieving 3 rings from the bottom of the lake.
3. Swim 25 yards, retrieve a 10lb brick off the bottom of the lake, and swim with both hands on the brick back to shore.
If the participant cannot complete any of the above challenges, they will need to choose a different class.
Class Descriptions
Archery
Sharpen your aim and shooting skills. Your instructor will show youthe safest and best way to enjoy the sport. With practice, maybe you can hit the bullseye! (Offered at Tween, Teen, and Specialty camps only.)
Aviation
Interested in flying? Learn from a certified flight instructor and get hands-on experience with what real pilots do. You'll get tospread your wings on a real airplane flight where you'll be at the controls! (Offered at Specialty Camp only.)
Basketball
This is a week of intense one-on-one as well as group instruction. With qualified instructors you will spend the week with practice drills, games, and learning new techniques. At the end of the week you will show off your new skills in the grand finale campers vs. staff game. (Offered at Teen and Specialty camps only.)
Basketry
Have you ever wanted to weave your own basket? With the extra time given for class, you will be able to make a large and fancy basket.
Birds
Do you enjoy watching and listening to birds? In this class, you'll learn to identify different varieties of birds by their appearance and sounds.
Candles
Learn to make different types of candles in this class.
Canoeing
Are you strong enough to manouever a canoe through the raging waters of the Au Sable River? :) Learn how in the canoeing class.
Ceramics/Glass
In this class you will learn how to make a ceramic piece from beginning to end! Not only will you take home your work of art, but you will learn to pour your own piece, take it from the mold, clean it,and paint it all the way to the last firing! You will even learn how to run the kiln.
Crafts
Enjoy working in a friendly environment to create cool stuff that you can take home. Each year new projects are available. It’s a great opportunity to make friends while learning something fun.
Digital Photography
Get on the cutting edge of photography with our Digital Photography class! Our expert staff will teach you the do’s and don’ts of composing digital photographs. You will also learn to improve the quality of your photos through Shareware. If you have your own digital camera, we encourage you to bring it so you can increase your skill using your own camera. There will be some cameras available for use at camp. Next time your friends get together, you can record the memories using your new skills.
F.I.T. (girls only)
This camp session focuses on the nurturing and discovery of a girl’s body, mind, and soul. Each day will include workouts using pilates, strength training, and aerobics. Campers will also learn healthy snacking ideas. Each individual will use tools to discover her most flattering colors and styles using her discovered personality type. It’s sure to be a fast-paced andfun-packed week! Sessions will be directed by a certified personal fitness trainer with special certifications in youth fitness. (Offered at Teen Camp only.)
Fishing
Experience the thrill of trying to land a 40-inch pike while being with friends in the great outdoors. Take on the challenge of finding the right bait to catch and release bass, perch, pike, and trout. Learn fly fishing or various rod and reel techniques. Bringing your own gear is encouraged but not required. The fish are waiting and spaces are limited, so sign up today!
Geocaching
Do you like orienteering and treasure-hunting? This class is the ultimate treasure hunt! Using navigational techinques, you'll hide and seek containers called "geocaches" all over camp.
Golf
Whether you’ve never swung a club or would like to improve your skill, you will find this week packed with the fundamentals of golf. Learn chipping, golf etiquette, and putting.
Gymnastics
Love the excitement of cartwheels and round-offs? Let our gymnastics expert take your tumbling to a whole new level. Improve your positioning, execution, form, style, and technique. At the end of the week you will show your new talents by performing in the special gymnastics program for the rest of the campers. (Offered at Teen and Specialty camps only.)
High Adventure
Scaling our 36-foot wall is just one of the things you'll do during the week. You will also canoe, mountain bike, drive go-carts, and much more. Climbing has increased in popularity everywhere! Challenge yourself on the high ropes course. Certified instructors will help you advance through the week creating more challenges for you to master.
Horses
Campers receive practical training in the fundamentals of how to ride and handle a horse. Certified instructors supervise every class to make sure that safety is foremost and that every camper has a great time.
Kitchen Creations
How do you fold a napkin into a rose? Where does the dessert fork go? Come learn these things, plus make bread dough from scratch and learn quick and easy snacks, meals, and party planning. You will impress friends and family with your new creative kitchen skills.
Leather
Make a wallet, keychain, or whatever you want using leather. Imprint designs of your choice to make it just like you want it.
Lifeguarding (ages 15+)
Did you ever want to work as a lifeguard at a public pool, beach, or summer camp but weren’t certified? Now you can be! To get certified you will have to work hard swimming laps, perfecting your strokes, taking CPR, and practicing saving lives. Passing the test is not guaranteed, but if you work hard you can do it! Must be a competent swimmer. (Offered at Teenand Specialty camps only. Requires both class periods. Additional book fee of $30. Limited space.)
Mammals
Are you interesting in animal life? Would you like to be a biologist someday? Learn lots in the mammals class!
Model Rockets
Build your own rocket and shoot it to the stars.
Mountain Biking/Go-carts
Do you love the thrill of pushing yourself up a steep hill on a mountain bike? You'll have a great time learning how to be an even better mountain biker during this class. You'll also enjoy trips speeding around the go-cart track with the wind blowing through your hair.
Outdoor Survival Skills
Learn how to survive in the wilderness without electricity. Which plants are edible? What should you do if you run out of water? Learn all these things and more during this exciting and useful class.
Pinewood Derby
Whittle your own pinewood derby car from a block of wood. Then race it to see if your car is aerodynamic enough to beat the competition.
Rocks & Minerals
You will become acquainted with object lessons from the world of rocks and minerals that will help you to understand more about our Creator. You willalsolearn the difference between rocks and minerals and the basics of identification while using this information to identify local rocks and minerals for your own personal collection.
Soccer
It’s a goal! Can’t stay away from the field? Join this class and learn all there is to know about the game. Our instructor will help you develop the skills you need to play with more confidence. Kickoffs, breakaways, dribbling, and of course—scoring. Let our staff show you the ins and outs of soccer at its finest. At the end of the week you can test your newly acquired skill in the annual campers vs. staff soccer game.
Sport-a-Day
Love playing sports? Then this class is for you! Each day campers will play a different sport--soccer, ultimate frisbee, football, etc. Get your game on and sign up for this class.
Swimming
Under the direction of our water safety instructors and lifeguards, campers will be able to advance in their swimming skills while working towards certification. Best of all, be trained to save lives and avoid dangerous situations. There is a class for beginners, intermediate, and advanced.
Wakeboarding/Skiing
Wait until your friends hear that you learned how to wakeboard or waterski at camp! Whether you are a beginner or experienced in the sport, you will be able to practice and discover new, advanced techniques. Learn to jump, ride the wake, and more.
Welding Design
Your instructor will show you how to create a project made from steel while safely using a wire welder and torch.
Wild Edible Plants
Have you ever wondered what you would eat if you were stranded in the wilderness? Learn what plants are safe to eat in this class.
Woodworking
You will learn to design your own wooden project with our experienced instructor using a variety of machinery. Safety is always our main concern.
